Jammu’s Naib Subedar Ravinder Singh Wins Gold at ISSF

Naib Subedar Ravinder Singh, a talented 29-year-old shooter hailing from Bishnah, won the gold medal in the Men’s 50m Free Pistol event at the ISSF World Championships held at Egypt International Olympic City Range. This victory, achieved on October 17, 2023, marks a significant milestone for Ravinder and Indian shooting sports.

Competing against 47 elite marksmen from around the globe, Ravinder displayed exceptional skill and determination. He began with a score of 93 in his first series but quickly rallied, posting scores of 98, 94, 95, 93, and a stellar 96 in the subsequent rounds. His final tally of 569 points placed him ahead of South Korea’s Kim Cheongyong (556) and the Individual Neutral Athlete Anton Aristarkhov (556), who finished with silver and bronze medals, respectively.

This achievement becomes even more remarkable considering Ravinder’s short preparation time, as he had to pause his training for over two weeks due to the birth of his daughter. With just 4–5 days of practice leading up to the championships, his dedication and focus resulted in a career-defining victory.

Ravinder’s individual excellence not only contributed to his personal success but also led India to a silver medal in the team event of the 50m Free Pistol, alongside teammates Kamaljeet (540) and Yogesh Kumar (537). The team finished with a combined score of 1646 points, narrowly missing the gold by just two points.

Earlier this year, Ravinder earned a silver medal at the National Games, further cementing his status as a commendable athlete. He expressed heartfelt gratitude for his victory, stating, “It’s not my personal achievement but for all those who stood behind me. I am thankful to my family and the Army for their support.”

Community residents and local dignitaries came together to celebrate Ravinder’s achievement. Former MLA Ashwani Kumar Sharma recognized him as a role model for the youth, illustrating the impact of sports on inspiration and aspiration.

The hero’s welcome in Bishnah demonstrates the local pride in Ravinder’s accomplishments. Hundreds of people flooded the streets, waving flags and chanting his name, embodying the spirit of celebration and patriotism.

Ravinder Singh’s journey serves as a reminder that with resilience and dedication, remarkable achievements are possible even under challenging circumstances. His success not only elevates the standards of Indian shooting but also ignites hope within the community aspiring to excel in sports.
