Intense Race for Four Rajya Sabha Seats in Jammu and Kashmir

The political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir heats up as nine candidates vie for four Rajya Sabha seats. The election, scheduled for later this month, features notable contenders from the ruling National Conference (NC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) who submitted their nomination papers to Returning Officer Manoj Pandita.

The nominations reflect a vibrant contest as candidates seek to secure their positions in the parliamentary representation of the region. Choudhary Muhammad Ramzan and Dr. Ali Muhammad Mir will compete for the first seat alongside independent candidate Prabhakar Dada.

Given the NC-led alliance’s control over 53 MLAs, Ramzan is expected to win without additional support from Congress, which has historically played a significant role in regional politics. The BJP, holding 28 MLAs, faces a challenging path as it rallies support for its candidate.

For the second seat, candidates Sajad Kichloo from NC and Rakesh Mahajan from the BJP also filed their submissions. With a similar voting dynamic as the first, political observers predict Kichloo will likely achieve victory, strengthening NC’s foothold.

In the contest covering two seats, Gurwinder Singh Oberoi and Imran Dar from NC will compete against BJP’s Sat Pal Sharma and independent candidate Kante Sayanna. This high-stakes scenario allows for intense competition, as securing the highest votes is crucial for success.

Political analysts anticipate NC’s candidates to gather a significant majority, projecting 29 votes for Oberoi and 24 for Dar, while the BJP aims to consolidate its 28 votes behind Sharma.

BJP nominee Rakesh Mahajan expressed confidence during a press briefing, thanking the party’s leadership for his nomination. “I am thankful to the national leadership for this honour. I am sure we will win all three seats,” he stated with conviction.

Sat Sharma, the party president, articulated the BJP’s strategic approach, promising a vigorous campaign. “We will fight with all our strength and script history. We aim to win more than one seat this time,” Sharma asserted, indicating an anticipatory tilt in voter sentiment.

Dr. Ali Mohammad Mir, another significant contender from the BJP, hailed his nomination, indicating the overwhelming support from the local populace. “Entire Kashmir is happy. I thank the central leadership for considering me competent for this responsibility,” he added, indicating confidence in the BJP’s outreach efforts.

NC spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq confirmed the completion of the nomination process, projecting optimism for the party’s candidates. “We are confident of winning all four seats. However, it is unfortunate that Congress did not agree to what was offered. I urge all secular forces to support our candidates,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of unity among secular parties in the region.

Senior NC leader Choudhary Muhammad Ramzan asserted their commitment to addressing pressing developmental and political issues in Parliament. “We will come up to people’s expectations. There are a number of issues — developmental and political — that must be addressed, and we will talk about them,” he insisted, showcasing the party’s dedication to the constituents’ needs.

The upcoming elections for Rajya Sabha seats promise a fierce political showdown within Jammu and Kashmir, stirring anticipation among constituents as the date approaches.
