An Air India Express flight, IX 398, carrying 160 passengers, made a precautionary landing at Cochin International Airport on Thursday morning after the crew detected potential tyre damage. This incident took place at 9.07 am as the flight was en route from Jeddah to Kozhikode.
According to an airline spokesperson, the crew noticed a possible issue with the aircraft’s tyres, likely caused by a foreign object on the runway at Jeddah airport. They decided to divert the flight to Kochi for safety reasons.
“The aircraft made a precautionary landing due to suspected damage to the aircraft’s tyre,” the spokesperson confirmed. “Only the tyres were affected, and there was no issue with the landing gear, making it a safe landing.”
Officials emphasized that this was not an emergency landing. The flight diverted as a precautionary measure, particularly because Kozhikode’s Karipur airport is a tabletop airport, which presents unique landing challenges.
Upon landing in Kochi, all passengers were reported safe. “We are arranging for all guests to be transported to Kozhikode by road. We regret the inconvenience caused and reiterate our highest priority of safety,” the spokesperson added.
The Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) confirmed the safe landing, stating, “All emergency services were activated in advance.” There were no injuries reported among passengers or crew members.
Following the landing, a thorough inspection revealed that both right-side tyres had burst. The airport authority swiftly conducted a runway inspection, cleared it, and resumed normal operations.
Passengers appreciate the prompt actions taken by the airline and airport authorities. The incident highlights the importance of safety protocols in aviation and the efficient handling of in-flight emergencies. Authorities assure the public that all necessary measures are taken to ensure passenger safety.
Incidents like these remind us of the robust safety measures airlines must enforce. Expert voices in the aviation industry stress the importance of immediate decision-making in potential emergency scenarios. Safeguarding lives of passengers and crew members remains paramount, and proactive measures often prevent minor issues from escalating into serious incidents.
