The Jammu and Kashmir Police’s Crime Branch filed a chargesheet against two residents of Punjab for their alleged roles in a fake recruitment scam related to the Military Engineering Services (MES). The chargesheet emerged on Monday in the court of the Additional Special Mobile Magistrate, Samba.
This scam surfaced in 2023 when the accused reportedly duped two individuals from Samba district out of Rs 14 lakh, luring them with false promises of secured jobs in the MES. Bakshish Singh of Amritsar and Amandeep Singh of Jalandhar stand accused, with Bakshish already arrested after extensive efforts.
Authorities registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code following complaints from the two victims. They claimed the accused convinced them to pay substantial sums, claiming their investments would lead to job placements within the MES.
While Bakshish Singh is in police custody, Amandeep Singh remains on the run. Despite significant police efforts, including extensive raids and issuing a lookout notice, he has yet to be apprehended. Authorities have commenced proceedings to declare him a proclaimed offender.
The investigation revealed that the victims received forged appointment letters. The duo was misled into traveling to various locations, including Ranchi and Meerut, under the pretense of medical examinations and document verification.
Upon investigation, authorities confirmed that the appointment letters were counterfeit and never purportedly issued by the MES. The Crime Branch spokesperson emphasized the seriousness of the situation, noting how the scam affected innocent job seekers.
The Special Crime Wing (SCW) of the Crime Branch collected substantial evidence during the inquiry, including documentary proof, digital footprints, and bank transaction records. Forensic examinations of the questioned documents further corroborated the allegations against the accused.
The Crime Branch has issued warnings to the public to remain alert against fraudulent job schemes. They advise individuals to verify the legitimacy of recruitment offers through official government channels prior to committing any funds.
As job fraud cases increase across the nation, this incident underscores the importance of due diligence and caution among job seekers. Citizens should report any suspicious recruitment activity to the authorities promptly.
