Prime Minister Modi and Vietnamese Counterpart Pham Minh Chinh Discuss Strengthening India-Vietnam Ties

New Delhi, August 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met today at Hyderabad House in Delhi to discuss ways to enhance the India-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This high-level meeting aims to elevate the bilateral relationship between the two nations.

In a post on X, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted the significance of the discussions: “Taking India-Vietnam partnership to new heights! PM @narendramodi extended a warm welcome to PM Pham Minh Chinh of Vietnam at Hyderabad House. Substantive discussions to further energise the India-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership on the agenda.”

Prior to the meeting, PM Pham Minh Chinh paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, laying floral wreaths at the memorial where Gandhi was laid to rest. This gesture was noted by Jaiswal on X: “Remembering Bapu and his timeless ideals! PM Pham Minh Chinh of Vietnam paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat.”

Pham Minh Chinh, who is on a three-day state visit to India, received a ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, where he was greeted by PM Modi with a warm hug. The visit also included an inspection of a Guard of Honour by the combined defense services. Attending the reception were External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel, and Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal.

On Wednesday, during a meeting with External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, Pham Minh Chinh expressed his gratitude for the warm reception and acknowledged the efforts made to organize his visit on short notice. He also congratulated PM Modi on his re-election for a third consecutive term, calling it a ‘historic victory.’

Jaishankar welcomed Chinh’s visit as an opportunity to review bilateral ties and discuss regional strategic trends. He expressed his pleasure at receiving Chinh as one of the earliest visitors following the recent elections, emphasizing the special nature of the visit.

The Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, also played a role in the visit, welcoming the Vietnamese Prime Minister at the airport on Tuesday. Jaiswal remarked on X: “Warm welcome to PM Pham Minh Chinh of Vietnam as he arrives in New Delhi on a state visit. Received by MoS @PmargheritaBJP at the airport. India & Vietnam share civilizational links and a longstanding friendship based on mutual trust. The visit will further strengthen our comprehensive strategic partnership.”

The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that the India-Vietnam relationship, marked by age-old historical and civilizational ties, was elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during PM Modi’s visit to Vietnam in September 2016. India views Vietnam as a key pillar of its Act East Policy and a significant partner in its Indo-Pacific vision.
