Tamil Progressives Alliance Backs Sajith Premadasa for Sri Lankan Presidential Election

The Tamil Progressives Alliance (TPA), a political front representing Indian-origin Tamils in Sri Lanka, has announced its support for Sajith Premadasa in the upcoming presidential election scheduled for next month. The TPA, which advocates for the Tamil community across 13 of the 22 electoral districts in Sri Lanka, has pledged to back Premadasa in his bid for the presidency.

Support for Premadasa:

TPA leader Mano Ganesan emphasized that the alliance’s primary focus is the welfare of their people and the need to address their issues within Sri Lanka rather than seeking external assistance. Ganesan explained that the decision to endorse Premadasa followed unsuccessful negotiations with the incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who is also a candidate in the election.

“We held talks with President Wickremesinghe but did not receive a satisfactory response. We are confident that a Premadasa government will address our community’s issues more effectively,” Ganesan stated. He expressed hope that the TPA’s support would contribute approximately 800,000 votes to Premadasa’s campaign.

Political Dynamics:

The TPA’s endorsement of Premadasa could influence the electoral outcome significantly. However, it might lead to a split in the votes of the Indian-origin Tamils, as Jeevan Thondaman, leader of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC), a major trade union and political party in the Tamil plantation districts, is expected to support President Wickremesinghe. Thondaman currently serves as a minister in Wickremesinghe’s government.

Election Candidates:

The Sri Lankan Elections Commission announced on Tuesday that 18 candidates have so far paid deposits to contest the presidential election. Among them, seven represent independent groups, and eleven are affiliated with recognized political parties. Notably, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, leader of the National People’s Power (NPP) or the Marxist JVP, has also submitted his deposit, completing the list of main candidates anticipated in the race.

Election Outlook:

Political analysts predict a three-cornered contest between President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Sajith Premadasa, and Anura Kumara Dissanayake. As the election campaign heats up, the dynamics within the Tamil community and the broader electorate are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the final outcome.
