Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut sharply criticized the ruling parties in Maharashtra on Saturday. He stated that their failure to appoint the Leaders of the Opposition (LoP) in the state legislature reflects a fear of democratic scrutiny. Raut underscored that this absence undermines vital constitutional processes.
Speaking to reporters, Raut expressed concern over Maharashtra lacking a Leader of the Opposition in either House of the legislature. He called it a matter of shame, emphasizing that having a Leader of Opposition is not just a democratic necessity—it is a constitutional requirement.
Over the past decade, Raut alleged, systematic attempts have emerged to prevent the appointment of LoPs through electoral manipulation and political pressure. He accused the BJP of trying to weaken and insult the institution of the Leader of Opposition, highlighting that legislative business currently operates without one. “This clearly shows that the ruling parties are afraid of the post,” he asserted.
Moreover, Raut reminded the public of Maharashtra’s democratic tradition, which historically appointed Leaders of the Opposition despite opposition parties having weaker numbers. “Even when the BJP lacked sufficient numbers, it still received the LoP position. This tradition is now being deliberately dismantled,” he lamented.
The opposition parties have united in their demand for the appointment of Leaders of Opposition in both Houses of the Maharashtra legislature. Shiv Sena (UBT) has nominated Bhaskar Jadhav for the Legislative Assembly, while the Congress has put forth Satej Patil for the Legislative Council.
In addition to this constitutional debate, Raut also took aim at Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule. He criticized the minister’s recent remarks about potentially creating a separate Vidarbha state, alleging that such proposals enjoy the backing of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
“Shiv Sena (UBT) will strongly oppose any attempt to divide Maharashtra. The unity of our state is non-negotiable,” Raut declared defiantly.
Raut also pointed to a recent parliamentary debate on Vande Mataram, stating that the ruling BJP seemed unsettled by the presence and performance of Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
“There was visible enthusiasm in the debate due to Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. This reinforced the belief that democracy is alive and vibrant. The debate revealed the BJP and its affiliated organizations in their true light,” he claimed.
Finally, Raut highlighted the need for a discussion on the Maharashtra Geet in the state legislature. He argued that it would ignite essential discussions on the contributions of various leaders and movements toward the creation of Maharashtra and Mumbai.
