ED Attaches Assets Worth ₹40 Crore in Karnataka MUDA Case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached fresh assets worth ₹40 crore in its ongoing investigation into the Karnataka MUDA-linked money laundering case. This announcement came on Monday, following a provisional attachment order issued on October 4, which covered 34 immovable properties, including several sites under the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA).

With this recent action, the total value of attached assets in this case has now reached an alarming ₹400 crore. The ED’s investigation stems from an FIR filed by the Karnataka Lokayuktha Police that aimed to expose financial misconduct within MUDA.

The agency disclosed that the market value of the newly attached assets is approximately ₹40.08 crore. This significant figure reflects the scale of the alleged money laundering operations that have unfolded.

In a related development, the ED had previously arrested former MUDA Commissioner GT Dinesh Kumar in September. He currently remains in judicial custody. The investigation points to a complex scheme of routing and layering illegal funds attributed to Kumar.

“Such proceeds of crime were used for purchasing immovable properties in the name of relatives and associates of GT Dinesh Kumar. Further investigation also found illegal allotment of 31 MUDA sites by Kumar,” the agency reported.

The ED has established a “deep nexus” between MUDA officials and real estate developers. Evidence indicates that these parties engaged in cash transactions for site allotments, compensations, and layout approvals. This troubling connection raises concerns about governance and ethical standards within public institutions.

The MUDA case has not only led to the scrutiny of commission officials but has also brought to light alleged irregularities involving land allotment to Parvathi, the wife of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. However, the Supreme Court upheld a Karnataka High Court order in July 2024 that quashed ED proceedings against her, indicating the complexity surrounding this investigation.

The Justice P.N. Desai Commission, formed by the state government, has subsequently exonerated Siddaramaiah and his family from any wrongdoing. The Lokayuktha Police have also provided a clean chit to Siddaramaiah, his wife Parvathi, and two others, citing a lack of evidence to substantiate the claims of misconduct.

This investigation remains a significant aspect of the current political discourse in Karnataka, reflecting on the integrity of public services and the ongoing battle against corruption. As the ED’s efforts continue, the implications of this case are likely to resonate well beyond the immediate individuals involved, calling into question broader systemic issues.
