GMC Doda NICU Expertly Handles One of India’s Heaviest Newborns

In a significant milestone for neonatal care, the Department of Pediatrics at Government Medical College Doda successfully managed and discharged a newborn weighing 6 kilograms at birth. This baby, born on 25th October 2025 at 1:20 PM, stands as one of the heaviest infants ever delivered at the institution.

The newborn, delivered to a diabetic mother, faced severe respiratory distress within the first 30 minutes of life. Recognizing the urgent situation, healthcare professionals admitted the infant to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for immediate advanced management and monitoring.

Due to the baby’s condition, categorized as large-for-gestational-age with indications of respiratory compromise, the NICU team initiated specialized neonatal respiratory support. The baby underwent close observation for respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, temperature, and neurological activity. Over the following days, the infant showed positive responses, which enabled the gradual reduction of respiratory support.

During the final 72 hours before discharge, the newborn exhibited stable independent breathing, normal oxygenation, and effective temperature regulation, showcasing no episodes of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation. With the demonstration of sustained clinical stability, the baby received a discharge in healthy condition, accompanied by routine follow-up consultations.

The successful management of this challenging case occurred under the expert guidance of HOD Pediatrics, Dr. Najmus Saqib, along with senior faculty members Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma. They collaborated closely with a dedicated team of senior and junior residents.

A special acknowledgment goes to the nursing and paramedical staff of GMC Doda. Their vigilant monitoring, compassionate care, and unwavering commitment played a crucial role in the newborn’s successful recovery.

This achievement exemplifies the increasing neonatal expertise and teamwork within the Department of Pediatrics at GMC Doda. It reflects the department’s steadfast commitment to providing quality, evidence-based, and compassionate care to newborns and children in the region.
