Group Captain Ranjit Singh Sidhu Receives Vir Chakra for Gallantry

Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter pilot Group Captain Ranjit Singh Sidhu received the Vir Chakra, a prestigious wartime gallantry award, for his extraordinary courage during Operation Sindoor in May. The announcement, made on October 4, highlights his exceptional flying skills and leadership under fire.

Group Captain Sidhu demonstrated remarkable precision while conducting multiple deep-penetration strike missions to destroy strategic targets, all while navigating complex enemy air defences. His actions occurred during a significant four-day military confrontation between India and Pakistan, where his squadron successfully fulfilled all assigned combat objectives.

The official citation praises Sidhu for his “exceptional acts of gallantry, resolute leadership and unwavering dedication to duty.” He carried out plans across three distinct locations along the Western sector, leading missions that required quick, real-time decision-making amidst evolving threats.

His adept leadership ensured not only mission success but also the safety of his fellow airmen, enabling the IAF to maintain an enhanced offensive posture during operations, a critical factor in overcoming enemy tactics.

Operation Sindoor, which followed the Pahalgam terror attack, involved nine IAF pilots who earned the Vir Chakra for their roles in precision strikes on terrorist infrastructure and military positions in Pakistani-controlled territories. This operation reinforced India’s defense posture and its commitment to national security.

Among the other distinguished recipients, Group Captain Manish Arora, Animesh Patni, and Kunal Kalra also received the Vir Chakra. Group Captain Arora’s commendation specifically underlines his courage as he led unescorted strike missions through heavily defended aerial territories, performing low-level night manoeuvres to achieve pinpoint strikes despite severe enemy radar and missile threats.

Additionally, Squadron Leader Rizwan Malik received accolades for his valour and audacious manoeuvres that caused tactical confusion within enemy ranks, showcasing the high level of skill and bravery exhibited during the operation.

This recognition of gallantry comes as part of President Droupadi Murmu‘s approval of 127 gallantry and 40 distinguished service awards, announced on the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day. The awards celebrate the bravery and commitment of the IAF and its personnel amidst increasing regional tensions.

The commendation of Group Captain Sidhu and his colleagues highlights the critical and dynamic nature of modern aerial combat. As the face of India’s air power continues to evolve, their acts of bravery and strategic excellence stand as a testament to the dedication of the IAF towards safeguarding the nation.
