India Upgrades Kabul Mission to Full Embassy Status Amid Security Concerns

India has officially upgraded its technical mission in Kabul to a full-fledged embassy on Friday, marking a significant milestone in diplomatic relations with Afghanistan. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar made this announcement during his meeting with Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi. This decision comes as India seeks to enhance its cooperation with the Taliban-led government while addressing mutual security concerns.

Following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, India withdrew all its embassy officials, but redeployed a technical team in June 2022 to conduct limited operations. The recent upgrade demonstrates India’s desire to expand its engagement in Afghanistan, specifically in humanitarian aid, infrastructure development, and regional security cooperation.

Jaishankar conveyed the importance of the meeting, stating, “Your visit marks an important step in advancing our ties and affirming the enduring friendship between India and Afghanistan.” He underscored India’s deep commitment to the development and progress of Afghanistan, emphasizing a shared vision for stability in the region.

With India having previously executed several significant projects within Afghanistan, Jaishankar noted that this partnership has now been renewed. He commended the Taliban administration for displaying “sensitivity towards India’s security concerns,” particularly in light of the recent Pahalgam terror attack, which raised alarms regarding safety in the region.

“Both India and Afghanistan share a common dedication to growth, stability, and prosperity,” emphasized Jaishankar. “We must join forces in combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.” This collaborative approach reflects India’s commitment to supporting regional stability amidst ongoing challenges.

Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi echoed sentiments of partnership, describing India as a key regional player that has unwaveringly supported the Afghan populace. He expressed gratitude for India’s humanitarian assistance and reiterated Kabul’s eagerness to bolster cooperation across sectors like trade, infrastructure, and education.

The decision to elevate India’s diplomatic mission in Kabul signifies New Delhi’s strategic yet cautious re-engagement with the Taliban-led government. Driven by security priorities, regional stability, and enduring ties with the Afghan people, this upgrade plays a critical role in India’s foreign policy approach towards Afghanistan.
