Jammu and Kashmir’s athletes showcased exceptional talent at the 10th All India Inter-Sports Authority of India (SAI) Kayaking and Canoeing Championships, finishing fourth overall in the senior category at the National Centre of Excellence (NCOE), Alleppey. The championships concluded today, highlighting the prowess of emerging water sports talent across India.
The four-day competition hosted 197 athletes, including 92 girls, from eight SAI centres nationwide, showcasing the vibrant competitive spirit in Indian water sports. The event had an electrifying atmosphere as NCOE Alleppey crowned itself champion with a commendable tally of 24 gold and 15 silver medals, followed closely by NCOE Bhopal and NCOE Jagatpur.
The standout performers from Jammu and Kashmir, Mohammad Hussain and Sajad Hussain, made headlines by clinching double gold medals in the senior men’s canoe doubles 200m and 500m events. Their impressive achievements reflect the dedication and commitment of J&K’s canoeing athletes, having already captured attention at the Khelo India Water Sports Festival in August.
Jammu and Kashmir’s tally of eight medals included two gold, two silver, and four bronze, marking one of their best performances at the national level. This accomplishment not only boosts the spirits of the athletes but also enhances the region’s profile in the sports community.
The championships saw fierce competition across 96 medal events, underscoring the growth of kayaking and canoeing as sports in India. Prominent centres from Bhopal, Jagatpur, Port Blair, Bilaspur, Roorkee, and EME also participated, adding to the competitiveness of the event.
Moreover, recent endorsements of water sports by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his “Mann Ki Baat” address have significantly encouraged the sports community, positioning events like the Khelo India series at the forefront of national attention.
NCOE Alleppey’s dominance is emphasized with their total of 24 golds in the senior section and continuing superiority in the junior ranks. NCOE Bhopal secured 11 golds in the senior category and dominated the sub-junior section with seven golds. Meanwhile, Jagatpur solidified its status among the top contenders across multiple categories.
In a broader context, states like Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Kerala ranked among the leaders at the Khelo India Water Sports Festival, showcasing India’s emerging prowess and potential in water sports.
As J&K athletes return home, their remarkable achievements serve as a beacon of inspiration for upcoming generations, emphasizing the critical role of support and infrastructure in nurturing talent in kayaking and canoeing in India.
