Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has sanctioned ₹30.14 crore for various welfare schemes of the J&K Building & Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board (JKBOCWWB), ensuring direct online transfers to registered beneficiaries. This announcement reflects the government’s commitment to uplifting vulnerable workers in the construction sector.
Officials confirmed that the allocated amount will reach all Assistant Labour Commissioners who are tasked with making immediate transfers into the bank accounts of eligible construction workers. This timely aid will provide crucial support to those in the sector who face daily challenges.
The sanctioned funding will support a variety of flagship welfare schemes including education support, disability assistance, aid for chronic illnesses, and marriage assistance. Additionally, it will provide meritorious awards for the children of registered workers, ensuring a holistic approach to welfare.
In a meeting held in July, CM Abdullah emphasized the necessity for a broader definition of ‘construction worker,’ aiming to extend benefits to all vulnerable labourers in the unorganised sector. He underscored the importance of innovative policy mechanisms to expand coverage and ensure financial security.
“Construction workers are the backbone of our infrastructure development and deserve comprehensive and timely support,” the Chief Minister remarked. His statement reiterates the state’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of labourers.
Additionally, the Chief Minister expressed profound grief over a horrific bus accident in Saudi Arabia that tragically claimed the lives of 45 Indian pilgrims. The accident occurred early this morning when a bus carrying 46 Indian Umrah pilgrims collided with a tanker on their way from Mecca to Medina.
CM Abdullah extended his heartfelt condolences to the mourning families and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured. Initial reports revealed that the tragic incident left only one survivor with serious injuries.
Both events underline the government’s active engagement in ensuring the welfare of its citizens, whether through direct financial assistance to construction workers or through expressing solidarity with families affected by unforeseen tragedies.
