Hyderabad Cybercrime Police arrested a 30-year-old software employee for allegedly defaming a woman through a fake Instagram account. The suspect, a resident of Kachiguda, created this profile to target a politically exposed person in Hyderabad.
V Aravind Babu, Deputy Commissioner of Police for Cyber Crimes in Hyderabad City, detailed the incident. The accused allegedly posted abusive, defamatory, and sexually explicit comments in October 2025 on a video featuring the woman. The original video was uploaded by the “Pura Local” Instagram channel, which later circulated widely on other social media platforms.
The woman approached the police with a complaint, prompting authorities to register a case under multiple sections of the law. These included Section 66(D) and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, in addition to Sections 79 and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The legal provisions address online harassment, defamation, and misuse of technology.
According to police reports, the accused intentionally obscured his identity while posting offensive content. His actions aimed at defaming and harassing the complainant. Authorities seized one mobile phone from the suspect’s possession, which may provide additional evidence for the ongoing investigation.
In response to this incident, police officials emphasized the importance of online safety. They urged individuals to take proactive steps by capturing screenshots of abusive profiles, comments, and timestamps prior to blocking or reporting such accounts. This information could serve as crucial evidence in any legal proceedings.
The cybercrime unit offered further guidance, advising people to verify unknown social media accounts. They also encouraged users to resist sharing or commenting on unverified or inflammatory content that could perpetuate online harassment or misinformation.
This incident highlights the alarming trend of online defamation and cyber harassment, particularly against women, in the digital age. As social media platforms grow, so does the necessity for both users and law enforcement to stay vigilant against such rising threats.
