Supreme Court Issues Notice for CBI Probe into JPSC Irregularities

The Supreme Court of India on Monday issued notices to the Centre and the Jharkhand government regarding a plea for a CBI probe into alleged irregularities in the Jharkhand Combined Civil Services Preliminary Examination. The court’s decision addresses concerns raised over the integrity and transparency of the examination process.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohan called for responses from the Union of India, the Jharkhand government, the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC), and relevant parties involved. The petition demands a thorough, independent investigation into claims of malpractice.

Senior advocate Manan Kumar Mishra represented the petitioner, activist Harisharan Devgan, who filed the plea through advocate Satyam Singh Rajput. Mishra argued that the scale of alleged malpractice necessitated a serious inquiry, preferably by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or a retired judge from the court.

The petition specifically invokes Article 32 of the Constitution of India, aiming for urgent judicial intervention in light of grave concerns over the examination’s credibility. It highlights irregularities surrounding the Jharkhand Combined Civil Services Preliminary Competitive Examination 2025, conducted by the JPSC, pursuant to Advertisement No. 01/2026, released on April 19, 2026.

Contentions in the petition raised serious questions about the fairness and transparency of the examination process. Activists like Devgan have expressed their worries about the potential impact of these alleged irregularities on future civil service candidates.

Public interest litigation serves as a crucial mechanism for ensuring accountability in government processes. As the Supreme Court takes cognizance of this matter, it remains vital for all stakeholders to uphold the principles of justice and integrity in public service examinations.
