Vaishnaw Warns Industry to Guard Against Cyber Attacks

NEW DELHI: Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has issued a stern warning to India’s semiconductor industry about potential cyber attacks and disruptions as the country strengthens its foothold in the global chip market. Speaking to PTI, Vaishnaw emphasized that India’s emerging strength in designing and manufacturing semiconductors could provoke retaliation from established global players.

In his remarks, Vaishnaw urged the industry to adopt a proactive stance against threats, stating, “We have to continuously be watchful of the potential geopolitical risks which will arise because India is now emerging as a country which can design and manufacture chips.” He noted that other nations might perceive India’s advancements as a direct threat to their interests.

The Minister underlined that India’s position in the semiconductor value chain requires constant vigilance. “We should not take this lightly. We must be cognizant of the risks and challenges which will come from dynamics that do not favour India’s rise in this sector,” he stated. Furthermore, he reassured that following these discussions, the industry has become more aware and ready to implement necessary protective measures.

India’s quest for a substantial presence in the semiconductor ecosystem is crucial for the nation’s technology and manufacturing ambitions. The Indian government aims to expand its semiconductor ecosystem beyond mere chip assembly and testing, moving into design, fabrication, materials, and semiconductor equipment.

In July, the Union Cabinet approved a significant initiative named Semicon 2.0, with an outlay of Rs 1,27,500 crore, dedicated to supporting chip design, advanced packaging, and talent development. This initiative builds on the first phase, which granted approvals for 12 semiconductor manufacturing projects with investments exceeding Rs 1.64 lakh crore, with several, including renowned firms like Micron and Kaynes, already operational.

The government’s commitment to enhancing India’s semiconductor landscape reflects an intention to substantially elevate its domestic supply chain and attract global companies to invest in semiconductor technologies. Recent developments demonstrate increased investor interest, highlighted at the recent SEMICON India event, where significant announcements included billions in investments from firms like Applied Materials and Lam Research.

During this mega showcase, the focus on robust investment commitments stood out. The government reported investments exceeding Rs 1 lakh crore under the second phase of the semiconductor scheme, signalling confidence in India’s semiconductor ambitions.

With India positioned as a trusted partner for international product development and manufacturing, the urgency to ensure cybersecurity in this pivotal sector has surged. Vaishnaw’s insights aim to prepare the industry to counter any potential disruptions and maintain momentum in India’s semiconductor journey.
