Fit-Again Neeraj Chopra Set for Season Return at Doha Diamond League on June 19

India’s javelin throw superstar and two-time Olympic medallist, Neeraj Chopra, is set to make his much-awaited return to competitive action at the Doha Diamond League on June 19, bringing an end to weeks of speculation surrounding his 2026 season schedule.

The 28-year-old ace thrower has been sidelined since the beginning of the year due to a back injury and has been undergoing rehabilitation, forcing him to miss the early part of the season.

Confirming the development, Chopra’s management agency, Vel Sports, announced on Instagram:

“First throw of 2026 lands in Doha! Neeraj Chopra returns to competitive action on June 19.”

The Olympic champion later shared the update with fans through his own social media account, posting a brief message:

“See you in Doha.”

Chopra’s inclusion comes as a late addition to the Doha event, as his name did not feature in the list of participants released by organisers on June 12. The Indian star has been training at Switzerland’s Olympic Centre in preparation for his return.

Star-Studded Field

The Doha Diamond League javelin competition promises to be a thrilling contest, featuring some of the world’s best throwers.

Among Chopra’s chief rivals will be:

Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage of Sri Lanka, the current season leader after his remarkable 92.62m throw at the Rome Diamond League on June 4;

Keshorn Walcott, the reigning world champion;

Anderson Peters, a two-time world champion.

The nine-man field also includes:

Curtis Thompson (USA),

Julius Yego (Kenya),

Jakub Vadlejch (Czechia),

Mohamed Huseein Ahmed Sameh (Egypt), and

Artur Felfner.

Interestingly, Pakistan’s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem, whose participation had been announced earlier, did not feature in the updated competitors’ list.

Return to a Happy Hunting Ground

The Doha venue holds special significance for Chopra. In May last year, he finally breached the coveted 90-metre mark at the same stadium, producing a throw of 90.23m to rewrite Indian athletics history. However, he had to settle for second place behind Germany’s Julian Weber, who registered 91.06m.

Commonwealth Games Selection

In another boost for Indian athletics, Chopra was recently named in India’s squad for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, subject to achieving the qualifying standard of 82.61 metres set by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).

The Doha Diamond League was originally scheduled to open the season on May 8 but was postponed due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

With his fitness restored and confidence high, all eyes will once again be on Neeraj Chopra as India’s golden boy begins another chapter in his illustrious career.
