GMC Jammu Launches Public Awareness Initiative on Heat Stroke Prevention

Jammu, May 11:
In view of the rising temperatures and increasing risk of heat-related illnesses, Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu has issued an important public health advisory to spread awareness about Heat Stroke, commonly known as “Loo Lagna.”
The awareness initiative highlights the causes, symptoms, treatment, and preventive measures related to heat stroke, especially during the peak summer season when prolonged exposure to sunlight and dehydration can become life-threatening.
According to the advisory, heat stroke occurs when the body temperature rises above 104°F (40°C) and the body fails to cool itself effectively. Major causes include excessive exposure to heat, inadequate water intake, and strenuous physical activities.
The advisory also identifies vulnerable groups such as children, elderly persons, outdoor workers, and individuals suffering from health conditions like high blood pressure, heart disease, or thyroid disorders. Excessive alcohol or substance use can further increase the risk of heat stroke.
Medical experts from GMC Jammu have warned citizens to remain alert for symptoms including high body temperature, excessive sweating, dizziness, headache, breathing difficulty, rapid heartbeat, confusion, and weakness.
The advisory recommends immediate first aid measures such as shifting the patient to a cool place, providing cold water, using cold compresses, and seeking medical assistance without delay.
To prevent heat stroke, people have been advised to drink plenty of fluids, avoid going outdoors between 10 AM and 4 PM, wear loose cotton clothes, consume ORS, coconut water and seasonal fruits, and minimize physical exertion during peak heat hours.
GMC Jammu appealed to the public to remain cautious during the ongoing summer season and follow all preventive guidelines to safeguard themselves and their families from heat-related illnesses.
