Top LeT Commander Zakir Ganie Killed in Shopian Encounter; Search On for Another Terrorist

A top commander of the banned terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba, Zakir Ganie, was killed during an ongoing anti-terror operation in the Chanapora area of Shopian, officials said on Thursday.

According to a senior police official, Zakir Ganie had been trapped along with another terrorist during the operation for the past five days. Security forces recovered his body from a cowshed along with arms and ammunition.

The official described the operation as a major success for the security forces, adding that fresh firing was heard near the encounter site, indicating that another terrorist is believed to be hiding in the area. Search operations are continuing.

In a post on X, the Jammu and Kashmir Police said, “You can run, but you cannot hide. One Lashkar terrorist neutralised by SOG Shopian in a joint operation with the Army’s Rashtriya Rifles and CRPF.”

During the operation, security forces recovered one AK rifle and one magazine from the encounter site. The operation remains in progress as forces continue efforts to locate the second terrorist.
