Traffic Halted on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway After Heavy Rainfall Triggers Landslides

Traffic movement on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was halted on Wednesday following heavy rainfall that triggered mudslides and shooting stones at multiple locations, officials said.

According to officials, intense rainfall during the early hours led to mudslides and shooting stones in the Udhampur district uptube and the Ramban district downtube, resulting in the accumulation of debris and rocks on the highway.

Traffic continued to move under regulation through the alternate carriageway at the affected stretches until conditions deteriorated further.

Traffic authorities said no fresh vehicles were allowed to proceed from Udhampur towards Kashmir or from Qazigund towards Jammu due to the continuing rainfall and the risk of fresh landslides.

Officials said men and machinery of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have been deployed at the affected locations, and restoration work is underway to clear the debris and restore normal traffic movement.

Authorities have advised commuters to avoid undertaking journeys on the highway until weather conditions improve and traffic is restored.
