The Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)-led Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) convenes in Delhi on Monday to finalize seat-sharing arrangements ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections. The meeting is a crucial step in strategizing against the formidable BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which has already revealed its own seat-sharing formula.
RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav and his son Tejashwi Yadav arrived in the national capital alongside leaders of smaller alliance partners. This gathering aims to solidify their stance and negotiate seat allocations that bolster the Mahagathbandhan’s electoral prospects.
As discussions intensify, the opposition coalition faces mounting pressure. Their meeting comes just after the NDA publicized its strategy, which includes Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) and the BJP both contesting 101 seats. Union Minister Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) has secured 29 seats, while the Hindustani Awam Party (Secular) and the Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) will contest six seats each.
Speaking to reporters before departing for Delhi, Mukesh Sahni, chief of the Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) and a Mahagathbandhan ally, acknowledged the internal challenges within the alliance. He expressed optimism about their meeting, stating, “Mahagathbandhan has become a bit unwell. We are going to Delhi, and all the doctors are in Delhi, so better treatment will happen there. We will return to Patna after getting healthy.” His comments reflect the urgent need for cohesive decision-making among alliance partners.
Shakeel Ahmad Khan, a Bihar Congress leader, attempted to quell concerns about any rifts, assuring that the coalition remains unified and focused. He emphasized, “A meeting will be held, and everything will be finalized. The Mahagathbandhan is united, and the current corrupt government is certain to go.” This statement points to their strategy to rally the electorate against the NDA.
With the Bihar Assembly elections approaching, the stakes remain high for the Mahagathbandhan. The assembly, consisting of 243 seats, is set for elections in two phases: November 6 and November 11, while vote counting will occur on November 14. As the opposition coalition seeks to finalize its seat-sharing pact, public sentiment and internal dynamics will play crucial roles in shaping their collective stance against the NDA.
In this political climate, maintaining unity within the Mahagathbandhan could prove vital in countering the NDA’s stronghold in Bihar. Observers await outcomes from today’s meeting, eager to see how these alliances adjust their strategies to capture voter support in the coming elections.
