Delhi’s Air Quality Remains Poor: AQI Hits 251

NEW DELHI: On November 1, Delhi’s air quality continued to fall within the ‘poor’ category, as the Air Quality Index (AQI) rose slightly to 251 from 218 the previous day, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The ongoing pollution crisis in the national capital poses significant health risks to its residents.

Several monitoring stations across the city reported alarming figures, with eight stations falling into the ‘very poor’ category. These measurements indicate that air quality is dangerously deteriorating, directly impacting the health of millions. The WHO guidelines recommend an AQI of 0-50 as safe, illustrating how Delhi’s numbers far exceed acceptable levels.

The CPCB’s Sameer app highlighted Wazirpur as the most polluted area, recording the highest AQI reading at 333. Such values typically trigger health advisories, especially for sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions.

The rising levels of particulate matter (PM) in the air stem from various sources, including vehicular emissions, construction dust, and industrial activity. Authorities urge residents to remain cautious, especially during peak pollution hours. The government has implemented measures such as increasing monitoring and enforcing pollution control regulations, but challenges persist due to rapid urbanization.

Health experts recommend individuals limit outdoor activities while embracing preventive measures like wearing masks and using air purifiers indoors. The ongoing air quality crisis highlights the urgent need for comprehensive action to combat pollution in the capital.

The situation adds to the long-standing concerns regarding urban air quality in Delhi, prompting calls for immediate policy interventions to mitigate the pollution crisis. For now, residents brace themselves for more challenging air quality in the days ahead.

As Delhi enters the winter months, the phenomenon of smog becomes more pronounced, often exacerbated by stubble burning in nearby states. In this context, public awareness about air quality and its impacts can play a crucial role. The implications of prolonged exposure to polluted air can lead to serious health complications, including respiratory diseases and cardiovascular issues.

According to a report by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, pollution in urban areas such as Delhi contributes to approximately 1.2 million premature deaths annually in India. This statistic underscores the importance of addressing air quality effectively.

Experts urge residents to stay informed about daily AQI updates and to take necessary precautions while navigating the city. Awareness can significantly mitigate the adverse effects of poor air quality on health.
