Amarnath Yatra Suspended from Jammu Amid Adverse Weather

The Shri Amarnath Yatra was suspended from Jammu towards Srinagar and Baltal on Sunday due to adverse weather conditions and ongoing restoration work on the pilgrimage tracks. This decision comes amid heavy rainfall and forecasts indicating further adverse weather, significantly impacting the safety of the routes.

Officials announced that no fresh convoy of pilgrims would depart from Jammu for the base camps. The suspension aims to ensure the safety of thousands who partake in this revered pilgrimage annually. However, authorities have allowed pilgrims who already completed their darshan at the holy cave to return to Jammu.

As per reports from the Joint Police Control Room, Baltal, a total of 588 pilgrims, comprising 435 men, 83 women, four children, and 66 sadhus, were on their way back to Jammu in 53 vehicles on Sunday morning. The down convoy was traversing the Ramban-Banihal sector of National Highway-44, a crucial route linked to the pilgrimage.

The authorities decided to suspend the Yatra from both the Baltal and Pahalgam routes starting August 9. This precautionary measure responds to the recent heavy rains that caused significant damage to the tracks, making them unsafe for pilgrimage activities. Expert assessments predict further adverse weather, leaving the restoration teams with limited options but to prioritize safety over schedules.

Officials noted that the Yatra will only resume when weather conditions improve and the affected tracks are declared safe for movement. Pilgrims planning to participate in the Amarnath Yatra should keep monitoring official updates regarding weather forecasts and track status.

The suspension of the Amarnath Yatra highlights the importance of safety and preparedness in pilgrimage management. Every year, hundreds of thousands embark on this spiritual journey, and the authorities remain committed to ensuring their safety amidst the challenges posed by nature.
