Cloudburst Damages Houses in Kishtwar’s Chatroo; Waterlogging Reported in Shopian

A cloudburst struck the Chatroo area of Kishtwar district in the early hours of Saturday, triggering a flash surge of water and debris that damaged several houses and other structures, officials said.

The incident occurred at around 2:30 a.m. following heavy rainfall. While multiple residential and other buildings sustained damage, no loss of life or injuries have been reported so far.

Soon after the incident, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Chatroo, accompanied by police and civil administration teams, reached the affected area and initiated damage assessment and relief measures. Restoration work is also underway.

The cloudburst occurred amid an ongoing spell of moderate to heavy rainfall across Jammu and Kashmir. The Meteorological Department had earlier forecast intense showers over the Jammu division and adjoining areas, warning of the possibility of flash floods, landslides, mudslides and waterlogging in vulnerable locations.

In a separate weather-related incident, heavy rain caused waterlogging in the Pahlipora area of Shopian district in south Kashmir, with rainwater entering several houses. Police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel were deployed to carry out rescue and relief operations.

Authorities have advised residents, particularly those living in low-lying and landslide-prone areas, to remain vigilant and avoid venturing near streams, nallahs and unstable slopes until weather conditions improve.

Officials said the situation in Chatroo is being closely monitored, while further details are awaited.
