Monsoon Set to Arrive in North Bengal Within Days: IMD Update

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Monday that the southwest monsoon is expected to enter West Bengal’s sub-Himalayan districts, including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Jalpaiguri, within the next three to four days. This marks a delay from the normal onset date of June 6.

Current weather patterns indicate that the northern districts of West Bengal already experience pre-monsoon rain. The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall over the coming days, which will further enhance the monsoon’s arrival. The humidity levels in southern Bengal, however, remain high, even with intermittent rain.

The IMD’s bulletin stated that heavy rainfall is likely over the next two days in sub-Himalayan districts such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar, prompting local authorities to prepare for possible disruptions.

Specifically, Alipurduar, bordering Assam, reported the highest rainfall in West Bengal over the previous 24 hours, with a staggering 133 mm recorded up to 8:30 AM on Monday. Other areas also witnessed rainfall, with Jalpaiguri receiving 53 mm, Cooch Behar 18 mm, Darjeeling 7.8 mm, and Kalimpong 19 mm.

This surge in moisture brings much-needed relief to farmers and residents eagerly awaiting the arrival of the monsoon. Experts highlight that timely rainfall is crucial for the agricultural sector, which relies heavily on the monsoon for irrigation. According to agricultural analysts, the pre-monsoon showers will aid in the preparation of fields for the kharif crop season.

The forthcoming monsoon is particularly important not just for agriculture but also for the socioeconomic fabric of the region. Increased rainfall can help replenish water resources, benefiting both rural and urban communities.

Overall, the IMD’s forecast provides an optimistic outlook for regions that depend on seasonal rains. As the weather transitions, residents are advised to remain prepared for heavy downpours, particularly in the identified districts.

The upcoming days will be crucial for monitoring weather changes. Meteorologists are closely observing conditions that indicate the monsoon’s advancement into other parts of West Bengal, with expectations of widespread rainfall that could commence shortly afterward.
