KL Rahul Praises Galle Wicket After India’s 165-Run Victory

India’s cricket sensation, KL Rahul, praised the quality of the Galle wicket following India’s 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test, describing the encounter as a “great Test match”. He emphasized that the pitch offered valuable assistance to both batters and bowlers throughout the five-day contest.

The match marked a memorable moment for Indian all-rounder Manav Suthar as he delivered an exceptional performance, claiming a ten-wicket haul and steering India to a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Key contributions from players like Devdutt Padikkal, who scored an impressive 167, played a crucial role in India’s commanding win, ultimately earning him the Player of the Match award.

Post-match, KL Rahul shared insights on the Galle pitch, acknowledging its balanced nature. He noted the surface provided support for spinners while also permitting well-disciplined batters to make runs. He specifically pointed out Sri Lanka’s Sonal Dinusha, who scored 100 runs in the first inning and an 84 in the second, showcasing effective batting strategies.

Rahul asserted, “I think it was a great Test match. The wicket played really well throughout the five days. There was something in it for spinners, but the batters who applied themselves also scored runs.” He appreciated the performance of both pace and spin bowlers, calling it an ideal Test match.

As the rain approached right after India secured their victory, Rahul expressed relief at the team’s timely win. He revealed that the Shubman Gill-led side focused on securing quick wickets, particularly breaking the vital partnership between Keshara Nuwantha and Dinusha. This strategy helped them regain control of the game, eventually leading to their success.

Rahul mentioned the players’ mindset, stating, “Just relieved, honestly! We kept looking at the cloud upstairs and knew there was one big shower coming. We aimed to not delay the game and get wickets as quickly as possible.” The urgency propelled the players to act swiftly after dismantling the solid partnership, leading to a cascade of wickets.

India’s solid performance saw them defeat Sri Lanka by 165 runs, bowling the hosts out for 206 while defending a target of 372 runs. Manav Suthar’s stellar show included figures of 6/55 in the second innings, marking a remarkable achievement in only his second Test.

Sri Lanka began Day 5 at 84/4, relying on strong resistance from Dinusha and Dhananjaya de Silva, who together amassed 95 runs before a breakthrough by Jadeja ended Dhananjaya’s stay at 59. Dinusha’s valiant effort continued, but Suthar swiftly turned the tide by clinching three wickets in the 76th over, concluding the innings with a final strike on Nuwantha.

Initially, India posted a formidable 464 runs in their first innings, capitalized by Padikkal’s 167 and Rahul’s 82. Responding, Sri Lanka managed 284 runs, with Dinusha being the standout performer. Following India’s second innings collapse to 193, they set Sri Lanka a challenging target of 372 runs, which ultimately proved too steep.
