Sarfaraz Khan Joins Team India for Sri Lanka Test Series

Indian batter Sarfaraz Khan has officially joined the Team India camp as the team prepares for the first Test against Sri Lanka, starting on August 15 at Galle. His addition follows the injury of Sai Sudharsan, who has been ruled out of the two-match series.

Sarfaraz, a talent from Mumbai, took to Instagram to showcase a selfie donning the Indian jersey, demonstrating a lean physique after dedicating time to fitness. He aims to make a significant impact after a successful domestic season.

This Test match marks Sarfaraz’s return to the national squad after an extended absence. His last appearance was against New Zealand in November 2024, during which India faced their first home series loss in twelve years, suffering a whitewash.

Having made his Test debut earlier in 2024 against England at home, Sarfaraz now boasts six Tests and 11 innings for India, scoring 371 runs at an average of 37.10. His performance includes a century and three fifties, with a remarkable high score of 150.

Following a stellar domestic season, Sarfaraz earned his spot in the team. He amassed 429 runs in seven Ranji Trophy matches, averaging 53.62 with a century and a fifty. His outstanding form continued into the T20 format, where he scored 329 runs in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy at an impressive average of 65.80 and a striking strike rate of 203.09. He recorded a century and three fifties during this campaign.

In the 50-over format, the Vijay Hazare Trophy also saw Sarfaraz shine, racking up 303 runs in six matches. He maintained a stunning average of 75.75 and a strike rate of 190.56, including a century and two fifties.

His remarkable performances in domestic cricket culminated in a contract with Chennai Super Kings for ₹75 lakh. Although his IPL outing was modest, he managed 161 runs in seven innings at an average of 23.00 and a nearly 170 strike rate.

Most recently, Sarfaraz showcased his skills in the Mumbai T20 League representing Aakash Tigers MWS, where he scored 161 runs in five innings with a blistering strike rate of 214.67, featuring a half-century.

As the series against Sri Lanka approaches, India currently stands fifth in the World Test Championship standings. Under the leadership of Shubman Gill, the team has secured four victories and endured four losses in nine matches, holding a Points Percentage (PCT) of 48.150.

The updated squad for the Sri Lanka Test series includes Shubman Gill (Captain), KL Rahul (Vice-Captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Devdutt Padikkal, Saransh Jain, Auqib Nabi, and the newly added Sarfaraz Khan.
