CM Omar Abdullah Welcomes US Ambassador; Rejects Foreign Intervention

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah welcomed US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor during his visit to Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday. Abdullah emphasized the importance of regional governance, asserting that these challenges remain strictly a domestic concern.

In an engaging discussion about the diplomatic visit, the Chief Minister stated, “After a long time, a US Ambassador is visiting Jammu & Kashmir. We will speak with him. I would like to hear him.” His welcoming remarks set the tone for future dialogue.

However, Abdullah firmly established his boundaries regarding foreign involvement in local affairs. He declared, “Our problems are not his concern. It is not my habit to complain about our issues to the ambassador of another country. Our problems will not be resolved by Washington, but by our own government.” These statements clearly reflected his commitment to domestic sovereignty.

Abdullah acknowledged pressing issues faced by residents, particularly concerning waterlogging in various parts of Srinagar. He explained that current authorities are actively working to address long-standing gaps in the city’s civic planning. “Waterlogging in parts of Srinagar is a legacy issue. It’s not the creation of the last two years, not even the last five years,” he noted.

He continued, “Neither you nor I know who gave permission to build colonies without providing drainage. Now, retrospectively, we are creating drainage in these colonies. We have identified the problematic areas. When we receive warnings from the Met Department, we arrange additional pumpage.” Abdullah’s proactive approach reflects his commitment to improving infrastructure and governance in the region.

As the CM navigates this high-profile visit, he reinforces the importance of autonomy in governance and the need for effective communication with international counterparts without compromising local issues. The visit by the US Ambassador represents a significant moment in regional diplomacy, with Abdullah positioning himself as a leader focused on the self-reliance of Jammu and Kashmir.
