In a bid to ensure a peaceful celebration of Independence Day, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have implemented multi-layered security arrangements across the Kashmir Valley. Inspector General of Police (IGP) V K Birdi announced these measures during a briefing with reporters on Tuesday, ahead of the national holiday on August 15.
While overseeing preparations at the Balidan Stambh, Birdi reaffirmed, “The Jammu and Kashmir Police always maintains robust security arrangements not just in Srinagar city, but across various districts of the valley.” He elaborated that the security measures include not only specific venues but also the areas surrounding the city.
Regarding ongoing investigations into recent attacks in Anantnag and Pulwama, Birdi stated, “It is ongoing and so, it would not be appropriate for me to disclose that right now.” He emphasized the importance of sharing information at an appropriate time. The IGP has appealed to residents to partake in the Independence Day celebrations, stating, “This is a public function. The police only act as a helper or organiser.” He encouraged large public participation to ensure the event’s success.
On Monday, Birdi convened a comprehensive security review meeting to discuss arrangements for the Independence Day events scheduled across all districts of the Valley. Attended by high-ranking officers including the IG BSF and IG CRPF, the meeting aimed to assess the overall security situation.
During the discussions, senior officers briefed Birdi on security provisions. District police heads reported on preparations specific to their regions, detailing measures tailored for Independence Day celebrations. The IGP directed officers to intensify area domination and patrolling, particularly in vulnerable zones.
With the main celebration set to take place at Srinagar’s Bakshi Stadium, Birdi emphasized prompt completion of preparations to ensure everything runs smoothly. “Ensure that security checkpoints are further strengthened, particularly during night hours, at vulnerable locations and along critical entry and exit points of the city,” he instructed.
Birdi also highlighted the need for strict vigilance against threats to peace and security. He urged enhanced alertness across all jurisdictions to mitigate risks. As part of these security measures, the police have conducted surprise checking and frisking operations in Lal Chowk and other key areas of the city.
The Kashmir Valley has a long history of celebrating Independence Day, often marked by both festivities and heightened security due to past tensions. Police officials strive to balance public safety with the community’s right to celebrate their national identity freely.
As the region approaches August 15, the police’s preparation reflects a commitment to ensuring that the Independence Day celebrations proceed without disruption, enabling citizens to rejoice in national pride while remaining safe.
